Dear Alexa – By now you know that I live my life by a set of rules. A code of conduct. I find these ‘rules’ to guide me in times of uncertainty. In dark times, I rely on the muscle memory. Since you were born, you have heard my simple rules of life that should guide us all. One of those rules is:
“Don’t inconvenience others for your own convenience.”
These seven words can address so many areas of our lives and remove the complexity of understanding right from wrong. Good from bad. Selfless from Selfish.
I was taught to always put others first. And I have tried to instill this basic belief system in you from day one. Be polite. Be kind. Be generous. (although you will need to establish boundaries with takers). Just the other day you asked about the manners and etiquette class that I enrolled you in when you were just 10 years old. The fact that you remembered, and asked if I could find a similar class for you again, let me know that some of my belief system has stuck.
