Instant gratification and the void

Instant gratification and the void

Your Dad and I came from meager backgrounds and have worked all our lives to support ourselves.  No, this isn’t a “walked up hill both ways” kind of account, just a perspective.  For you have never known lack – have absolutely no idea what it would be like to go without something you desire, least of all need.  We do.  It’s perhaps the reason why Dad works so hard to make sure you have everything you ask for and gladly provides support to mom despite her “deadbeat dad” references.  Seriously inappropriate BTW.

We also lived in a much simpler time without (gasp!) social media telling us everything that’s lacking in our life and what we need to buy to be happy.

I have to admit that I struggle with the notion that we need to fulfill your every whim the second you want something.  No thinking things through, consideration of the pros and cons, or waiting for something to go on sale. No tolerance for delays nor any real commitment once you obtain something.

You live in a world of instant gratification.  But is that really a good thing?

Snap decisions have weighed you with responsibilities that you may not have considered in the long run.  Shopping has become a form of “exercise” and “quality time” with mom.  But is all this stuff you’re accumulating actually fulfilling?

Many years ago, I went through a phase where I was shopping a lot. I was attempting to fill a void in my life and quickly learned that no amount of stuff could compensate for what was lacking – True fulfillment is an inside job.

I can imagine the void you are experiencing without daily connection with your wonderful father.  It explains the “need” for more pets and an entirely new wardrobe every season. This perspective helps me understand and even embrace this spending habit of yours…

Perhaps instant gratification is merely an attempt to fulfill a deep void in your life the only way you know how.

But don’t you worry.  Dad is – always has been – and always will be present so –

that void is but an illusion… albeit a persistent one…

Thanks Einstein.
